my little Halloween bear

My cute little bear on Halloween, who refused to smile for the camera, behaved like a raving lunatic for Great Grandma June and Great Granny Lyn, but who appeared to be having the time of her life bouncing around a driveway when no one else was looking.  I would hear, "She's smiling now!" but as soon as I turned around with the camera, this is what I got.

After last year's fantastic Halloween excursion, Ryan and I thought we'd attack this year a little differently.  We decided to go visit the great grandmas earlier in the afternoon, not too long after Laci's nap and lunch time.  This way, we were sure she'd be her sweet, happy little self, especially since she's a whole year older and obviously much more mature.  Of course, we missed visiting with the cousins, but the thought of repeating last year was too much for me to handle.  As it turns out, Laci didn't scream and cry because she was tired and overwhelmed like last year.  Instead, she proceeded to throw several full-on, throw yourself on the floor, bury your face in the carpet and wail, true terrible-two's (even though she's only one) tantrums.  Visiting great grandma's house means lots of No's, lots of Don't climb on that's, and lots of Don't touch that's.  And also, lots of tantrums.  Real tantrums.

I did survive, and so did Laci, although Ryan might have been wounded by the evil glares I was sending his way as our daughter sobbed and snotted all over herself.  Against our better judgement, we decided to stop at our friend Jake's house before going home.  His house is located in a neighborhood known at the mecca of Trick-or-Treating in our area.  Carloads of kids from all over visit this neighborhood every year, and sometimes we set up "camp" in Jake's driveway and hand out candy to the kids.  Much to my surprise, and great relief, Laci didn't throw any tantrums, and might have even had some fun.  Although, as I've already said, the fun was definitely not in front of the camera.  She was especially interested in the dry ice, which kept all of us on our toes.  I didn't take her trick-or-treating, but she helped hand out candy to the kids and had plenty of fun running around the driveway eating cookies.

"Ooooooooooooooooooooooooo"
I had been protesting Halloween since the beginning of the month.  To the point that I didn't even get a costume for Laci until the night before.  Her "costume" is actually a pair of pajamas I found in the hand me downs, and fortunately was perfect, because it was not only cute, but very warm.  In the end, I'm glad I dressed her up and might have even enjoyed painting her little nose black.  Ok, I really enjoyed painting her nose, but I could have done without the tantrums, and the wailing, and definitely the snot.  I can only assume that next year will be better, because really, I don't think it could get any worse.

  1. My Kellie would have such blow out temper tantrums (for YEARS) that I am surprised that either of us made it through. In fact, they probably taught us a few lessons (me-patience as I learned to wait them out!) We are so close now that she is actually looking forward to my getting old so I can move in with her!!! Crazy!

  2. Oh, too bad I missed the costume in person. :( that's okay the pictures will have to suffice. I quite like the o's she is obviously giving to the dry ice. Figures.. . It is pretty cool stuff though so I don't blame her.
